“Opia: the ambiguous intensity of looking someone else in the eye, which can feel simultaneously invasive and vulnerable”

-John Koenig’s Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows

My Words:

Narrowing in on faces

Edges blur

Look for a target

A pupil

An iris

Can’t look away

Flashes of life lived

Emotions you aren’t supposed to see

Beautiful sadness

Look down

Overly aware

Of every muscle

How it moves

To show empathy

You aren’t supposed to feel

Air coming in

Going out

Too rapidly

Chest rises and falls

With over exaggeration

Necessary re-aquaintence

Next is your stop

Nod and smile

Strangers brush shoulders on the train
